Occasionally I get an inquiry from someone who wants me to come and care for their cat every other day. It may seem that your cat is ‘self sufficient’ and will do fine seeing someone every other day but fifteen years experience has taught me otherwise.  The following are all true stories from pet sitters of what can happen in just the 24 hour window between visits. These incidents could have been very serious indeed if more time had elapsed between visits.
  • Indoor cat greeted pet sitter outside. Neighbour with a key had stopped by to ‘check that everything was all right’ and accidentally let the cat out.

  • Client had accidentally shut cat in closet before they left.
  • Cat became tangled in computer wires and was unable to get free.
  • Cat got stretchy collar stuck on its lower jaw and was unable to break free.
  • Arrived at home to find it had been burglarized and one of the indoor cats was missing. After searching for days the pet sitter found the cat.
  • Cat began urinating blood. Cat sitter took cat to emergency vet where it was discovered he had a life threatening urinary blockage.
  • Cat had been playing with an interactive ‘bird toy’ that the client had left out and gotten the string knotted around his front legs and was unable to move.
  • Cats had been playing and accidentally closed the bathroom door, trapping them inside with no food, water, or litter box.
